Collision Took The Life Of Driver As Emergency Personnel Sought To Free Him
After a horrific high-speed crash in the Long Beach area, a driver was pronounced dead despite the best efforts of firefighters to extricate him from the wreckage of his vehicle. Authorities investigating the incident have reported that the collision was most likely caused by a loss of control due to speeding. The accident took place just before midnight on Sunday evening, while the victim was traveling down Willow Street. At approximately 11:55 pm, investigators say, the driver spun out of control, sending his black 2005 Dodge Neon spiraling into the median at Clark Avenue and flipping into the air.
As the vehicle landed, police officials report, it flew into the path of several other vehicles, causing a four-way car accident. Two of the occupants driving these cars were injured severely enough to be sent to a hospital. The third driver, though shaken, was mostly unhurt and was allowed to drive home.
Victim Killed In Long Beach Collision Was Lakewood Native
After crashing into the other vehicles, the victim's Neon came to a stop and police were alerted by several 911 distress calls. The injured parties of the two struck vehicles, a 54-year-old man in a Ford Ranger and a man of 64 years driving a Chevy El Camino, were able to be stabilized at the scene. They are currently hospitalized, and both expected to make a full recovery.
Emergency personnel were unable to rescue the initial driver, who was finally extracted from the flaming wreckage of his car by firefighter using a device referred to as the Jaws of Life. Though this process took a little less than ten minutes, authorities claim, he had already succumbed to his injuries.
The victim was identified as a 23-year-old native of Lakewood. Police say that he was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. It is not currently clear whether alcohol was a factor in the incident, but law enforcement officials say they believe he was traveling at excessive speed before the collision.
