The NFL player, Dave Duerson, allegedly took his own life just over a year ago on February 17, 2011. He was found in his Florida home with a gunshot wound to the chest. His son filed a suit against the National Football League, stating that they did not do as much as they could to prevent this from taking place. The family of the deceased football player argues that the concussions he suffered during his career ultimately led to the severe damage in his brain. The lawsuit begs the NFL to provide the surviving family with information on how they handled the treatment and prevention of these concussions during his career. Duerson's family argues that the NFL negligently failed to provide him, along with other players, the information they need about the common, negative effects that these concussions may have on him – the concussions that ultimately led to the death of their beloved family member.
The attorney representing the family in the wrongful death suit argues that the NFL should have played an active role in educating all players, current and former, about head injuries and the lasting effect they may have on the player and his family. According to the family's attorney, they [NFL] failed to make a connection between playing football, head injuries such as concussions, and brain damage. In the lawsuit, the family is also holding a popular helmet manufacturing company accountable for creating helmets that allegedly do not adequately protect these players from concussions. Lastly, the suit blames the concussions for the life-ending action of the former football safety, stating that the brain damage affected his judgment and impulse control.
