Statistics From the Health and Safety Executive on Construction Accidents

By McCoy & McCoy  Jan. 21, 2011 6:20p

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has provided some valuable statistics relating to construction accidents which can help with the prevention of future accidents in this industry.

  • The construction industry statistically has the largest amount of "fatal" injuries. In the years 2008 to 2009, slightly over 29% of all fatal injuries stemmed from the construction industry but the good news is, the actual number of deaths was less than the previous year.
  • Slips and trips are the most common construction accidents .The most common construction accidents involve and slips and trips. 17% of construction accidents were attributed to slips and trips resulting from falling from heights whereas in other industries, only 8% of accidents were attributable to slips and trips.
  • Falling or moving objects were an additional cause for many accidents in the construction industry with 16% vs. the overall 11 % in other fields. In construction, workers must deal with many potentially hazardous pieces of equipment, electricity, heavy objects and building materials which provide risks for falling, moving or having things collapse.

Statistics show that the field of construction has a decrease (36% decrease from the years 1999/2000 compared to 2008/2009) in the number of major injuries reported, but still has the largest amount of major injuries reported as compared to any other main industry group.

Employer Responsibility to Maintain Safety

It is an employer's responsibility to ensure the construction site is safe and free from hazards to protect the workers, but this unfortunately, does not always happen. Negligence can enter the picture leading to injury and even death. Certain accidents are unavoidable but others are a direct cause of improper safety procedures, poor and inefficient management, defective equipment or unsafe conditions on the site.
