The family of a veteran police officer has suffered a second tragedy within weeks of the first. F.L. was on duty when he was hit by a Navy base vehicle. Details of the accident were not available as the investigation is ongoing but it is known that the 21-year veteran detective with the Navy Station's police was critically injured when the vehicle hit him at about 1:30 in the afternoon (the vehicle was being driven by another base employee). The detective was rushed to the Newport Hospital where medical staff worked to save the man's life. Unfortunately, he died later that evening. He was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. According to reports, F.L. had only recently returned to duty after recovering from a motorcycle accident he was in several weeks ago this summer. He and his wife had been on his motorcycle when they crashed. He suffered serious injuries but his wife's were fatal and she died. There was no word about whether or not F.L.'s family would be filing a wrongful death claim against the Navy base or the individual who was driving the vehicle that hit the detective. Consult with a skilled personal injury attorney if you lost a loved one in an accident that was not his or her fault.
When can a wrongful death suit be filed?
Wrongful death claims can generally be made when someone is fatally injured in an accident that was caused by carelessness, recklessness or negligence. The circumstances may involve a car accident, motorcycle accident, trucking accident, premises liability, medical malpractice or any instance where someone's wrongful conduct resulted in a death. A surviving family member such as a spouse, child, parent or sibling may be able to obtain compensation related to the loss.
