In Florida, bicyclists have the same rights as motorists. Bicycles are considered to be vehicles and therefore must obey all of the same traffic laws as other vehicles. Bicyclists are expected to stop at traffic signals and stop signs, yield where right of way is demanded, and use lights when riding at night. Other regulations include the use of a fixed and regular seat, keeping at least one hand on the handlebars while riding, and not carrying more people on a bicycle than the number for which it was designed. The brakes on a bicycle must permit the rider to stop within 25 feet while traveling at 10 miles per hour. Parents are responsible for ensuring that their children obey all Florida bicycle laws.
Additional rules apply for riding on sidewalks and crosswalks, where bicyclists have the same rights as pedestrians. In these locations, however, bicyclists are duty-bound to give the right of way to pedestrians. When passing a pedestrian, they are required to give a signal which the pedestrian can hear. Bicyclists must use bike paths where they exist. Otherwise, they are expected to ride as close to the right side curb or roadway as possible. On one-way streets, they may ride as close to the left side curb or roadway. No more than two bicycle riders may ride two abreast unless they are riding on paths designated strictly for bicycles. The above are just some of the rules for bicyclists in Florida; knowing and obeying all of the laws made for this activity is vital for safety.
Clearwater Personal Injury Attorney
Adherence to the laws regarding bicycling is important. Even with safe riding, however, bicyclists face a risk of injury and death from negligent motorists. When in a traffic collision, a bicyclist's risk of injury or death is much higher than the occupants of a car, SUV, van, or truck. Head injuries are common in bicycle accidents, which is why wearing a helmet is crucial.
