One Slain, Others Wounded In Multi-Vehicle Accident On I-75 In Tennessee
Members of the Highway Patrol were forced to shut down a section of Interstate 75 after a catastrophic accident left flaming wreckage and debris littered across the highway. At least one victim of the accident has been pronounced dead, with several others being taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.
After surveying the damage done, a Highway Trooper told reporters that the crash was one of the worst he had ever seen. The wreckage resulting from the violent collision sprawled over roughly a quarter-mile of the interstate. According to initial reports filed in the aftermath of the crash, the incident took place as a result of traffic stemming from a less serious car accident earlier in the day.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. on that tragic afternoon, a semi-truck failed to brake for traffic and went charging into a pickup truck, through a van, an RV, and finally a second semi, before coming to a halt. The ensuing damage left at least three people in serious condition, as well as taking the life of a fourth.
Local Man Rescues Truck Driver Trapped Inside Vehicle
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the second-semi was stuck inside his car after being struck by the first truck. The semi's bed, packed full of packets of ketchup, was not badly damaged, but the cab caught fire with its driver unable to get out. Thanks to the efforts of a man living near the interstate, he survived, after he was pulled free of the flaming cab by the Samaritan.
Investigators are still determining the exact cause of the collision. They have not released the identities of any of the victims of the crash, but have said that three were transported to the University of Tennessee Hospital in critical condition. The body of the fourth victim has been taken to the State Medical Examiner's office to undergo autopsy.
