Recently released results from a survey conducted on high school seniors and juniors showed that a significant percentage of these teens admit to texting and doing other things on their cell phone while driving a car. The survey was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year as part of research into risky behaviors that occur in this age group. This was the first time that questions concerning texting while driving appeared on the survey which is conducted every other year. Of the more than 15,000 high school students polled throughout the country, 58% of seniors and 43% of juniors admitted to texting while driving within the last month at the time of the survey. This outcome was higher than many studies had previously estimated. Federal statistics show that distracted driving is responsible in many car accidents involving teens and the cause of nearly 16% of teen car crash fatalities. If you were injured in a car crash because the other driver was texting while driving then you should speak with a Houston car accident attorney as soon as you can. Find out what legal options you have for obtaining compensation.
More about Texting while Driving
Although Texas does not ban texting while driving for all drivers, all drivers are expected to drive responsibly and avoid doing those things which hinder their ability to avoid accidents. State law bans novice drivers from using a cell phone or texting while driving during the first 12 months of having their license. Use of a hand-held phone is also banned for all drivers when in a school zone. No matter what laws allow or ban, however, any driver that acts negligently or recklessly and causes a car accident should be held fully liable for all injuries and property damage.
