Houston Woman Slain By Reckless Driver, Authorities Allege
Officials with the Houston Fire Department say they were unable to save a woman in time to prevent fatal injury after she was trapped inside the wreckage of a car on the Hempstead Highway in the northwest of the city. A driver, who claims that he was blinded by headlights, rear-ended the victims' vehicle while they stopped to make a turn.
Both occupants of the rear-ended car, a Toyota Camry, were reportedly stuck inside the twisted wreckage of their vehicle until firefighters were able to rescue them using a special device known as the "Jaws of Life." Authorities with the HFD told reporters that they used the device to pry apart the metal cage trapping the victims, who were quickly taken to a nearby hospital. The driver was listed as being in stable condition at last report; the female passenger, however, passed away later that morning despite CPR attempts on the part of emergency medical professionals.
According to reports filed in the aftermath of the incident, the victims were stopped in the center turning lane of Hempstead Highway, near West By NW Boulevard. At approximately 5:40 in the morning on a Thursday, the Camry was rear-ended at high speed by an approaching Ford Focus driven by the suspect.
In an attempt to explain his actions, the driver reportedly told police investigators that his eyes were impaired by the bright headlights of oncoming traffic, preventing him from noticing the victims until it was too late. Authorities say they do not currently believe the driver to have been intoxicated at the time of the collision. If convicted of charges of vehicular manslaughter in connection with this case, the man could face a lengthy prison sentence.
