Worker Burned in Electrical Fire

A fiber optics technician in Santa Cruz, California, was just doing his job when he was set on fire by an electrical malfunction. The 47-year-old works for CableCom LLC, and was tampering with wires when the fire sparked. He was burned on his left arm, let leg, left ear, back, and chest in the blast of sparks. The company believes that the accident could have been prevented, and will probably end up granting Margarito Mesa a significant amount of workers’ compensation.
The man is still in the hospital. He says that he was installing fiber optics as a contractor for Comcast. He was up high in a bucket lift when he came in contact with an electrical line, which sparked the fire. A witness on the road spotted the blaze, but was not aware that Mesa was in the midst of it. He says that he noticed that the truck had gone up in flames and tried to lower the lift. He scrambled and eventually found a fire extinguisher in Mesa’s truck.
He was able to put out the flames and call 911 in search of emergency aid for Mesa. Another worker was near Mesa in a separate bucket lift about 50 years away, and was able to lower the injured Mesa to the ground. Investigators believe that the man was on fire for at least 4 minutes. The witness doused Mesa with the fire extinguisher while the man thrashed about violently in pain. CableCom LLC is looking for ways that they can prevent other injuries like this one and practice the optimal safety.
