Student in Critical Condition After Pedestrian Accident

Officials are still investigating the pedestrian accident that left an 18-year-old Dakota High School student in critical condition earlier this week.

They do know that she was crossing 21 Mile Road near the school when she was struck by a Toyota Prius driven by a woman dropping her own child off. However witnesses to the accident said that the young girl stopped in the road for a few brief moments before she was hit; she was not using an official crosswalk at the time. And while the driver has been cooperative with officials so far, it is still unclear as to whether speed was a factor in this pedestrian accident.

The young girl was rushed to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital where she underwent surgery immediately. She has now been listed in critical condition.

Crisis counselors are being made available for students at Dakota High School, according to a spokesperson for Chippewa Valley Schools.
