Out of 19 high profile elder abuse cases just three people have been put in jail so far by the Genesee County's Elder Abuse Exploitation Task Force.
This task force was created to catch people such as Mary Jo Davis and Steven Neil, who were discovered to be committing elder abuse, according to Sheriff Robert Pickell and Prosecutor David Leyton. This includes cases of embezzlement, elderly citizens left lying in their own filth and other egregious acts. Yet even though the task force was created in 2007 there have been no suspects that actually made it to trial. Since most of the suspects are first-time offenders Prosecutor David Leyton said that they would likely just get shorter sentences.
Since most of these cases are first-time offenders the charges are normally dropped from felonies to misdemeanors. Under normal circumstances, however, first-degree elder abuse is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
