After being under surveillance for one year, a caretaker finally found herself in handcuffs for serious elder abuse.
According to the deputies investigating her case, 61-year-old Carol Louise Juette had been swapping out medicine from inmates and switching it with the prescription drugs that her 76-year-old patient used. Juette worked both at the Wasco State Prison as a nurse, and lived full-time with the elderly woman.
When the authorities searched their home, they uncovered a copious amount of different prescription drugs hidden there. Some of the prescriptions were still in the plastic containers bearing the inmates' names to which they were supposed to be dispensed. While none of the medications were narcotics, a few fell under those listed in the California Health & Safety Code section 1137 (a). Under this section of the code, possession of these medications is considered to be possession of a controlled substance.
