Richard Davey, general manager of MBTA, will fire John McCarthy, 61, for his recent arrest for drunk driving. McCarthy is a thirty year veteran and has been a staple in the Somerville area. As for keeping one of his best employees Davey replied that, "there is no reason whatsoever he should keep his job."
When he was pulled over officers immediately smelled alcohol on McCarthy's breath. Upon searching his person they found an open vodka bottle in his pocket even though McCarty had repeatedly denied drinking anything. According to a report written by one of the responding Transit Police officers, " McCarthy was sitting in the driver's seat of the bus slouched over the steering wheel with his foot on the brake." The bus had been on but not in a driving gear at that time.
The accident happened that afternoon at a red light at Medford Street and McGrath Highway.
