A
pedestrian accident occurs when a person on foot or riding a bicycle is struck by a motor vehicle. Victims of pedestrian accidents are incredibly vulnerable to injury, and may suffer from a number of crippling or life-threatening injuries, such as brain, back or spinal cord injuries, internal bleeding or bruising, broken or fractured bones, paralysis, permanent disability, and even death.
When a victim of a pedestrian accident is able to prove the accident was caused by the negligence of another, he or she may be awarded damages for his or her pain and suffering, current and future medical bills relating to the accident, lost wages and benefits, mental anguish, and decreased enjoyment of life.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
Needless to say, pedestrian accidents are serious, and can change a person's life in an instant. When walking or riding a bicycle near motorists, it is important to keep in mind some important safety tips:
- Look both ways before crossing the street or stepping off a curb.
- Look drivers in the eyes to ensure they see you.
- Do not talk on your cell phone, text message, or listen to music. These distractions may affect your ability to notice if a car is coming towards you.
- Always be aware of traffic and how motorists are driving, especially those making turns.
- If you are walking on the side of a road that doesn't have a curb or sidewalk, make sure to walk facing traffic so you can see what is coming at you.
- Stay out of a driver's blind spot and never walk behind a vehicle that is backing up.
- If you walk at night, wear bright colors or something reflective.
- If you are on a sidewalk, stay on the right side of the walkway, further away from the street.
- If you are walking with children, always hold their hand.
