West Virginia Hospital Settles Surgical Malpractice Case for $2 Million

A West Virginia Hospital has agreed to pay $2 million to the family of a woman who died due to a surgical mistake.

Genevieve Haught died after undergoing a surgery to freeze a lesion on her kidneys. Haught's family claims Dr. Jayapal Reddy of Weirton Medical Center perforated her stomach during the surgery, which later got infected and led to her death.

The lawsuit also claims that Dr. Reddy, along with Dr. Hardev Parihar (who Reddy was assisting), had no experience performing the procedure. Haught's family also claims the hospital was negligent in allowing the doctors to perform the procedure in the first place.

Dr. Parihar denies he was untrained to perform the procedure and that Dr. Reddy was acting as his assistant during the surgery.

The lawsuit was settled just before it was about to head to trial.
