The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled more than 1 million Kolcraft and Kolcraft licensed playpens. The playpens are distributed by Kolcraft Enterprises, Inc. of Chicago and reportedly manufactured in China.
Kolcraft products are widely perceived has safe products for children. However, recent reports claim that the playpens pose a risk of injury to children. Kolcraft received 347 reports concerning the sides of the playpen, which can fail to latch properly. If the latch isn't secure, children who push or lean up against the side of the playpen may fall and sustain an injury. There were 21 costumer reports that claimed the collapsed rail caused bumps, bruises, and one concussion.
The potentially defective models include Kolcraft Travelin' Tot Play yards, and similar play yards with other Kolcraft licensed brand names, such as: Carter's, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear, and Eric Carle.
The products were reportedly sold at Babies R Us, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Sears, and Target from January 2000 through January 2009. The products retailed between $50 and $160.
The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using the playpen immediately and contact Kolcraft or the CSPC for information on how to get a repair kit. If your child suffered an injury due to a defective playpen, you can file a report with the CPSC.
