Rottweiler Fatally Mauls Baby Girl

A man in Warren, Michigan was sentenced to six months in jail and 3 years probation after his rottweiler fatally mauled an infant girl.

Christopher Fura, 21, was sentenced to six months in jail and 3 years probation after pleading no contest to involuntary manslaughter. During his probation sentence, Mura is prohibited from owning any type of dog.

According to Assistant Prosecutor Steve Kaplan, Fura and his stepbrother, Jason Winters, had only owned the dog for 10 days prior to the attack, but knew the dog had a history of aggressive tendencies. The dog had previously gotten into fights with other dogs, growled at children, and even bit Fura. Earlier, Winters plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 3 years probation.

The mauling took place in the home of an acquaintance of Alexis Cox, the baby's mother. Cox left the baby sitting in her car seat while she went to the kitchen to prepare a bottle. During the few short minutes she was away, the dog fatally bit the baby in the head.

Cox and Lisa Livingston, the baby's grandmother, have also filed a civil lawsuit against Fura and Winters.

"I don't think it's right that someone would take that big of a dog to someone's house," said Cox. "That was my child; I had to take my child with me. But a dog that big, it should have been on a leash."
