Plastic Surgeon Guilty of Sexual Abuse for Videotaping Female Clients

Often when a woman arrives for a medical procedure, she assumes that her doctor has seen naked female bodies dozens of times before. Patients believe that their body won’t cause any sexual arousal in their doctor, and that they can trust that they are in a safe situation when they need to undress for a physician. Yet in a recent case, one plastic surgeon was convicted of videotaping his female clients as they undressed and watching the videos over later on for his own enjoyment. The 42-year-old doctor was arrested on Thursday, August 2nd, 2012 by the Los Angeles Police Department. His crime was discovered by the Medical Board of California’s Operation Safe Medicine.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Dr. Lance Everett Wyatt will face half a dozen misdemeanor counts for videotaping female patients after they had undressed for their reconstructive surgeries. These criminal charges will be unrelated to any personal injury claims that are filed by the offended victims’. Wyatt has been featured on TV Shows about plastic surgery because of his expert technique. He has also appeared on 20/20 and The Doctors.
Yet now the surgeon will be featured on television for another purpose, and it won’t be one that boosts his career. The doctor will face four counts for the secretive videotaping and two counts for sexual batter and battery. These latter charges have to do with the way that the doctor would conduct his examinations. Video tapes show that the defendant would violate his patient’s trust and invade their privacy in both the filming aspect and in the way that he conducted his pre-surgery routines.
The police were shocked when they watched Wyatt’s videotapes, and realized that he had been using his profession as a place for sexual fulfillment with unsuspecting patients. Even if they were pleased with their plastic surgery procedures because of Wyatt’s talent, the women were still all victims of tragic medical malpractice. The police say that patients deserve to feel safe and secure when they are in the care of a physician. While this usually translates into physical safety during an operation or confidence in a diagnosis, it can also mean that the people need to feel secure that their doctor is not appraising them sexually when they are in a vulnerable position.
One of Wyatt’s patients’ discovered his twisted procedures when she undressed in his clinic to prepare for a plastic surgery. As she was taking off her clothes, she noticed a camera and took it. She put back on her clothes and fled with the evidence in hand, which she turned over to the police. The prosecutors believe that Wyatt made secret recordings of other women that same day in August of last year. The police believe that Wyatt violated the sacred trust pact between a doctor and patient and needs to be punished accordingly.
While no sexual assault took place, women who are placed in this vulnerable position and violated by a doctor who is not practicing professional conduct in his office can sue for medical malpractice and seek damages. The emotional pain of being violated, even just by sight, can be traumatizing. Some women develop post-traumatic stress disorder from the experience and are devastated by the loss of trust that they have in their doctors.
