7-year-old Hit with Stray Arrow in Wisconsin

In Campbellsport, Wisconsin, a little girl was shot with an arrow on May 22nd 2012. She was walking with friends outside of her home in the street when the tragedy occurred. The sharp arrow hit her in the back, lodging itself deeply into her body. The arrow had a target tip, which is less destructive than a sharp hunting arrow tip. While the hit did a lot of damage, a hunting arrow may have been fatal. The arrow punctured her left lung, spleen, and stomach and came to a stop in the child's liver. The little girl was rushed to the hospital in a Flight for Life helicopter and underwent a 2 ½ hour surgery to remove the painful weapon. Her grandmother told ABC News that the entire event was very scary. She rushed to the child's side as soon as she was hit, hoping that she could pull through and survive the wound.

The child's mother, a woman with the initials L.S., says that she saw the entire catastrophe. The child was talking right outside of their home when the arrow darted out of nowhere and hit her baby in the back. She told a news conference that she screamed when she saw it happen. At the moment, the child is still under heavy pain medication. Her grandmother told news stations that she can take a few steps but still has not tried to talk and is not conscious much of the time because of the hurt.

The grandmother surmises that the shooter hit her granddaughter entirely by accident. She pleaded over the news for the offender to own up to his mistake. The police canvased the area near the family's home in Wisconsin, but so far they have not been able to locate the person who shot the arrow. The police say that their investigation shows it was probably a stray arrow, but that could change at any moment. Presently, the police have confiscated the bow and arrows of a man who lives in the path that the arrow took on the way to its' target. The weapons are currently at a crime lab undergoing inspection.

The crime scene investigators hope that by comparing the arrow that hit the child to the arrows in this quiver, they will be able to determine whether or not this man did the crime. The Lac County Sherriff has issued a $500 reward to anyone who can locate the shooter. He remains suspicious that the person who shot the arrow intended for it to hit this little girl. He says that he has never heard of an occurrence where an arrow has arrived out of nowhere and injured a small child. Even odder, he notes, is the fact that the shooter did not rush out seeking to help the child. If it was an accident, he assumes that the shooter would have been incredibly apologetic and helped to fix his grave mistake.

Some police speculate that the bow and arrow enthusiast shot his arrow blindly and was not aware of its' unfortunate target. They hope that this was entirely a blunder on behalf of the shooter, and that the person who caused the injury is not a further threat to society at large. The child who was injured was very lucky; had the arrow struck her one to two centimeters further she may not have survived the injury. She is expected to remain in the hospital for another two weeks or so, before she will sent home to recover. If the police are able to locate the shooter, there is a possibility that the family will sue him for the injury of their child.
