According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle registrations account for only 3 percent of all vehicle registrations in this country. In 2007, however, 13 percent of all traffic deaths were attributed to motorcyclists. An individual operating a motorcycle is 5.5 times more likely to be killed in an accident than the occupant of a passenger car. Per mile traveled, a motorcyclist is approximately 35 times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident as a motorist or passenger in a car.
Further statistics from the NHTSA point out that half of all motorcycle accidents were comprised of crashes with another vehicle. In 78 percent of these, the motorcycle was hit from the front. In 25 percent of those that were fatal, the motorcyclist struck another object, such as a concrete wall or a telephone pole. In 36 percent of fatal accidents, speeding played a part in what took place. The states that led in motorcycle deaths were Florida, California, and Texas.
