Tainted IV Packs Are Linked to Alabama Deaths

Alabama – The state health department has revealed that nine patients in Alabama hospitals have died after being hooked up to contaminated IV packs.

The state health department told the Birmingham News that the tainted intravenous nutritional supplements were contaminated with lethal bacteria called Serratia marcescens. When patients are too ill or too weak to eat, hospital staff will feed them intravenously, therefore the deadly bacteria was delivered directly to the patient’s bloodstreams. According to the Centers for Disease Control, a total of nineteen patients were infected between six Alabama hospitals.

All six hospitals had received the tainted IV packs from the same Birmingham pharmacy; however it is unclear if the deaths were directly caused by the bacteria itself.
