Pedestrian fatalities have increased and traffic safety departments are looking for ways to reduce these types of accidents.
In a recently reported accident, a young girl was killed when a truck ran over her as she was trying to cross a road after a hockey game. Similar accidents have been reported from cities across the nation. Police and traffic safety departments have recognized an increase in pedestrian fatalities and are trying to find ways to reduce these accidents.
Improving Safety for Pedestrians
Some resident groups have suggested installing more street lights around the areas hosting gaming events to make the area brighter during evening hours. Deploying more officers on the streets may act as a deterrent for motorists who frequently ignore traffic rules and cause accidents. It is also the responsibility of a pedestrian to be cautious and mindful of safety while walking on the road or crossing the street. The following safety tips and precautions can help a pedestrian stay safe while on the road.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
• Whenever possible, cross the street on a corner using a crosswalk and follow the traffic signals. Drivers are usually alert for oncoming pedestrians on crosswalks.
• Scan the street by looking left-right-left for any incoming traffic before attempting to cross the street. Keep looking towards the direction of incoming traffic while crossing the road to avoid getting hit by a speeding motorist who fails to see you.
• When using crosswalks with traffic signals, beware of motorists who ignore traffic rules and fail to yield for pedestrians.
• Visibility is the most important factor affecting pedestrian safety. It is generally difficult to see pedestrians crossing the road at night on unlit roads. Wear reflective clothing and carry a
flashlight while walking in the dark.
• Use the sidewalks while walking on the road. If a sidewalk is not available, walk on the left side of the road facing the incoming traffic.
• When walking on the road, be ready to take evasive action when a situation develops.
• Hats and hoodies may obstruct your vision; it is better not to wear them.
• Following traffic signals correctly is an essential aspect of pedestrian safety. When crossing a street on a crosswalk, follow the ‘walk/ don’t walk’ signs. Remember that jay walking is an offense and you can be charged with a ticket.
• Avoid distractions like texting and talking on a mobile phone while walking.
• Children should be supervised by an adult while crossing a street since they are impulsive and are difficult to see by larger vehicles.
