According to information provided by Highway Patrol spokesperson Juston Wheetley, the fatal car crash occurred when the pickup truck was northbound on Highway 185, and the driver passed another vehicle on the hill, and collided head on with a southbound car.
The collision caused the immediate death of the three occupants of the car. The three people in the car were identified as Casey A. Edwards, 25, the driver, and his passengers, and Shari J. Ryerson, 56, and Valerie R. Lewis, 28. Missouri state highway patrol reported that all the deceased were from the Sullivan area.

The highway patrol also reported that none of the people involved in this fatal car accident were wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred.
At the time of filing of the report, it was still unclear as to what might have caused the crash. In such cases investigators compile a report of the crash, which is then forwarded to the prosecutor's office in order to determine what, if any, charges will be filed. In this case, the report will be submitted to the Washington County prosecutor's office.
There are several reasons that accidents like these happen. Unsafe passing is one of the most common causes of
head on collisions. Many accidents occur when a driver tries to pass to the left side of a car that is in the front. The best way to avoid accidents in such situations is to maintain a safe distance between your car and the other car that you want to pass. If the driver is following too closely he will not be able to see far enough at the front of the vehicle he wants to pass. Whenever a driver wants to pass another vehicle, they should use their turn signal. After a driver has passed the vehicle, they should not attempt moving back into their own lane unless they can see the front wheels of the car they passed in the rear view.
