Woman Dies After Crashing into School bus

Friday, February 25th, 2011 – A woman died Friday morning when her car collided into a school bus headed to pick up students in Greenland, according to police.
The victim, Janelle Hamilton, 25, was driving on Winnicut Road around 7 a.m. when she had a head-on collision with a school bus. She died at the scene.The driver of the bus, identified as Amy Thibodeau, 36, of Rye, was not transporting students at the time. There were only two people on the bus during the accident, Thibodeau and her 5-year-old daughter, neither of which were injured during the crash. Hamilton was heading towards North Hampton when she lost control of her vehicle due to slippery conditions on the road, when she slammed head-on into the First Student school bus, which was traveling in the opposite direction towards Greenland. According to authorities, a mixture of snow, sleet and rain were the cause of the crash. Due to the treacherous conditions, Winnicut Road was shut down from Union Road to the North Hampton town line for the majority of the morning.
Amy Thibodeau has been a First Student bus driver for approximately 10 years. She was on her way to Greenland to pick up students when the accident occurred, said George Cushing, the Superintendent of School Administrative Unit 50, which covers the Greenland School District. Cushing was relieved the bus driver and her young daughter weren’t hurt in the crash, and he was glad that there weren’t any students on the bus during the incident; however, he expressed his sympathies over the death of the other driver.
