Toys Can Be Hazardous to Your Child’s Health

Not all toys on the market are safe and, just because they are produced by a major manufacturer or sold at Wal-Mart, Target or Toys “R” Us, do not guarantee their safety. As a parent, there are general rules that apply to children and toys that are common knowledge. For example, small parts are choking hazards and are not intended for small children, it’s also important to follow the age guidelines on the product. When an Easy Bake oven says for ages 8 and up, you don’t let your five year old plug in the Easy Bake into an outlet or bake any of its signature mini cakes inside the little oven. Nor would you let your 18 month old eat Play-dough. That’s just common sense; however, what happens when you follow the manufacturer’s directions and your child gets injured or seriously harmed anyways?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regulates the consumer products on the market. It is their responsibility to protect the general public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from all consumer products which are within the agency’s jurisdiction. When children have sustained undue injuries or death as a result of unsafe or defective toys, the CPSC will issue a recall and have that toy removed from the market. If you feel that your child has suffered due to an unsafe or defective toy, contact a St. Louis personal injury attorney to find out if you have a claim.
In September of 2010, over 10 million children’s toys were recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission with the assistance of Fisher Price. The list of items recalled included 7 million Trikes and Tough Trikes toddler tricycles, around 950,000 Healthy Care, Easy Clean and Close to Me High Chairs, 100,000 Little People Wheelies Stand n’ Play Rampway and many more. Fisher Price cited potential dangers from falling onto protruding parts and choking hazards from small parts.
