Advanced Technique Proves Unexpectedly Fatal

Several firearm experts are aiding a southern Missouri sheriff in his investigation into the death of a student at a gun range, looking into possibly safety improvements, reports the Kansas City Star.

The course was being taught to certify the trainees in proper safety procedures for the purpose of obtaining a concealed-carry license. The accidental death occurred when sixty-three-year-old Glenn Seymour was allegedly practicing an advanced maneuver that was beyond his level of expertise, the Douglas County sheriff reported.

Seymour shot himself in the chest while trying out a complicated maneuver with a semi-automatic 9mm handgun, a weapon with which he was unfamiliar. He was allegedly right-handed, but attempting to perform the trick with his left hand. The exercise involves drawing the weapon from a shoulder holster while simultaneously turning the safety off, then firing the gun, all in a matter of seconds.

Police Investigate Instructor For Responsibility

Sheriff Chris Degase spoke to reporters about his investigation into the potential wrongful death charge against the instructor, clarifying his position.

“I think we’re looking at an issue of the course of fire he was teaching. Is it consistent with where these folks were in their training?” he said in an interview. “In a concealed carry class, you’re dealing with a lot of people who have little to no training.

An expert in firearm training, Dan Smith, went on record saying the technique Seymour was attempting is generally only learned at very advanced levels of instruction.
