Officer Sentenced to 8 Years In Prison For Killing 4

A veteran with a suburban St. Louis police department, Christine Miller, was ordered by the judge to complete an 8-year prison sentence after she killed 4 Indian immigrants while intoxicated. Her son, Brian, is currently serving a five-year probation term for his own fatal DUI crash.

Miller was drinking late one March evening at O’Leary’s Bar and Restaurant, where she reportedly drank five Cosmopolitans before attempting to drive home. She moved into the wrong lane and collided with a car carrying five young men and women from India, three of whom were graduate students at Eastern Illinois University at Charleston. All but the driver of the car were fatally injured, and both he and Miller were severely injured.

Miller pled guilty to four counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of second-degree assault, for which she was given the relatively lenient sentence of 8 years.

Son of Officer Serving Time of His Own For Similar Mistake

At the hearing where she was sentenced, surrounded by family members of the slain victims, Brian C. Miller wept openly as his mother was handed her verdict. He understands the pain she is feeling, as Brian himself was convicted of a fatal DUI almost exactly a year prior to her hearing.

Now 24 years old, Brian was the same age as several of his mothers victims when he plead guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault after his own auto accident killed his passenger in Laclede County, southwestern Missouri. The driver of the other vehicle, Aaron Stanton, filed a lawsuit against the boy, but it was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be re-filed.

The younger Miller was given a suspended execution of his 10-year sentence, allowing him to complete five years of probation instead, though the charges will remain on his record. His mother, it seems, will not be so lucky.
