The Oregon Department of Human Services reports that more than 34,000 calls were taken statewide of possible abuse or neglect involving the elderly, disabled, and mentally challenged. An annual report regarding such abuse was published in August 2013 by the Office of Adult Abuse Prevention and Investigation. According to the report, data concerning elder abuse nationwide shows that only 1 in every 23 cases is ever reported to any government agency. In cases involving financial abuse and exploitation, only 1 in every 44 cases is reported and in cases involving neglect only 1 in every 57 cases is brought to light. An additional troubling statistic reported in this publication is that research done on the national level shows that more than half of all adults who are mentally ill or have developmental problems are the victims of repeated physical or sexual abuse during their lifetimes.
The report reveals that more than 10,000 accusations of elder abuse or abuse concerning the physically disabled were investigated in the state. Neglect and financial abuse were the most common types of abuse investigated. For elderly individuals in the state living with family members or in their own homes, the majority of investigations centered on financial abuse. For the elderly living in senior-care facilities and for developmentally disabled adults, the majority of investigations involved neglect. For those with mental illnesses living on their own, the majority of investigations involved physical abuse connected with domestic violence.
