Driver Flees DUI Stop As Officer Hangs On For Dear Life
A woman is currently being held without bond after she killed a man on a motorcycle while fleeing the cops, Fox News reports.
The incident began on Tuesday, May 10th, when a sheriff’s deputy made a routine DUI stop. Investigators into the incident say that the deputy, a 23-year old rookie to the force, pulled over the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck at the intersection of Florestate Drive and U.S. 19 at approximately 7:19 a.m, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The 21-year old suspect was given a field sobriety test, which she failed, and was handcuffed in preparation to be taken into custody. At this point investigators believe the suspect was able to slip free and run back to her car, with the rookie police officer in pursuit.
The driver took off just as the deputy reached into the window of the car, accelerating onto the U.S. 19 and swerving across three lanes of traffic with the officer clinging to the truck. She was shaken free of the vehicle and fell violently to the ground, suffering a head injury, a broken leg, and some severe scrapes. After being taken to a hospital, the deputy eventually recovered fully.
Fleeing Driver Collides With Motorcyclist
The suspect continued to flee at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, traveling north and eventually crossing district lines into Hernando County.
At the intersection of County Line Road, she refused to slow down, attempting to speed through a red light. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 66-year old man on a motorcycle was entering the intersection right as she approached, eventually colliding with him, leaving him to die of his wounds. The suspect continued to flee, but the flat tires she sustained from the crash allowed deputies to stop her shortly afterwards.
The 21-year old woman has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and fleeing the scene of a crime.
