Wet Weather Conditions: Major Factor in Truck Accidents

Weather conditions are a major factor contributing to truck accidents. All professional truck drivers in the U.S. who drive commercial motor vehicles are required to have a commercial drivers license. While they do not have control over the weather, they are expected to know how to operate their tractor trailer in such conditions because of the training they are suppose to have. Sadly, that is not always the case.
Weather conditions are such a major factor in tractor-trailer accidents due to the following:
1. Tractor tailers spend more time on the road and so travel more often in wet weather conditions.
2. They are less stable because of having a higher center of gravity, their weight and size. This makes it easier for them to tip as a result.
3. Because of their weight, they require longer stopping distances.
In wet weather conditions, the road surface may be more slippery than it appears. Where oil from other vehicles has dripped on the road, the raod is very slick and usually not visible.
There were more than 500,000 accidents involving large trucks and commercial vehicles in 2010. Commercial truck drivers can be negligent, overworked, under-trained, or just victim to mechanical failure. Wet weather conditions exacerbate these issues.
